Truth In Labeling?

To whom shall we turn for facts about the issues facing our communities? Two recent local issues are the financial condition of the community hospital and the consequences of locating a Wal-Mart in the area.
Labor union representatives have spoken, but can we trust them to tell us the whole truth and nothing but the truth? Can we accept all “facts” that carry a union label?
All issues have pros and cons, but you can’t get all the facts to consider from one side. Reading a newspaper is a start, but if all you know about an issue is what you read in the newspaper you are woefully uninformed. (Especially if you put much credence in Letters to the Editor!)
How then can a citizen stay informed? Read and participate. Read information from a variety of sources, available at the library and on the Internet. Participate in community meetings related to the issues at hand.
I read that this year Wal-Mart was named one of the top 10 corporations on the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility (HACR) Corporate Index for inclusion of the Hispanic community in all aspects of it’s business. Now that’s something to consider.
