Moral Solutions?

How should this country respond if immoral acts on the part of the governments and people in other countries cause genocide or famine or disease? Should we address the immoral acts or only respond to the results?

To quote from a recent editorial in the local newspaper on the worldwide spread of AIDS:
“[People in other countries] don’t really care what the United States thinks about their morals. Nor should the United States care about the morals of people in other countries.”
“The moral arguments don’t help fight AIDS — nor are they appropriate when it comes to the behavior of people in other countries. That’s not the business of the United States government.”
“Even critics of Bush have to admit that he’s made available more money than other administrations to fight AIDS overseas, particularly in countries most in need.
But, in some ways, the president still doesn’t get it. What it is that he doesn’t get is that AIDS is a disease, and that the fight against it involves public health policy — and not morals."

I don’t think the editorial staff of the local paper gets it. Immorality is the core cause of this world’s ills. Until this is addressed, all the money, food or weapons thrown at these problems will do little more than prolong the suffering and delay their resolution.
